Jared Steinberg -
About the Artist
by Corinne Joy Brown

Honing an artist’s view with a realistic eye and an abstract expressionists sensibility, Jared Steinberg transcends illustration in his oft-time narrative works that leave nothing but questions in the viewer’s mind, no story fully revealed or resolved. A keen observer of modern life and all its angst, his themes ring true: loneliness, the hidden sensuality in objects, the whispered secrets between people, the weighty presence of spaces, open or closed.

No landscape or slice of urban life escapes without his probing brush revealing the underside, the vulnerable belly, or the bleeding heart in the scene. We are voyeurs in his bisected world, standing behind the curtain, window, or door, peering into places that might not normally be ours to share. Yet we can linger, fixed by the emotion that’s an inevitable result. The work is that compelling. We cannot look away.

Still young enough to be considered an emerging artist in Denver’s art scene, a wise maturity prevails in subjects previously seen by masters like Hopper or Bonnard. Steinberg freely distorts and abstracts to render his subjects through his own deeply personal view with an original and vigorous hand. His draftsmanship is flawless; he clearly knows the rules in order to break them. Moreover, his interest in surface pattern, shape and texture diminish the importance of the subject as a real form, making it a vehicle for his facile play of brushstroke and color. The viewer can only wonder what might be next in his evolution as an artist. A possible liberation from the form?  For now, his body of work delights and disturbs, provokes and arouses. Steinberg is an artist to watch.
